Ideas for growing low-maintenance plants

June 22, 2015
“Plants give us oxygen for the lungs and for the soul. ”
— Linda Solegato

What is your favorite plant in your house? Or maybe you belong to the group of people who do not have plants because they think that they are not good with them? I love how plants and flowers bring life and brightness to any room. Flowers make me happy, and watching my plants grow and do well makes me want to do a happy dance.

It can be challenging to have healthy and happy greenery if lighting conditions at your place are not that great. But even if you do not live in a house with big windows and plenty of natural light, or are very busy, you do not have to give up on our green friends completely. They not only contribute to a relaxed feel at home. They also offer benefits that you might not know about:

  • plants filter air for you
  • plants lower your stress level
  • plants improve your concentration
  • plants make you happy
  • plants make you relaxed
  • plants help you fight cold
  • plants can help ease and also prevent allergies
  • plants help you to snooze better
  • ... and much more ...

Here is an idea for plants that thrive in low-light conditions and are not demanding at all:

Succulents

— Thomas Moore

We all know Aloe Vera or Agave. Our beauty products, smoothies, health supplements, ... they all contain them. Did you know they are easy to grow at home? Aloe Vera and Agave, along with many other plants, belong to a succulent family. Succulents are super easy to take care of, so if you struggled with having plants in the past because you always found them dry, succulents might be your new friends. There are plenty of fat plants to choose from, and they look great too. You can play with styling them in different ways, creating container gardens, adding stones and shells in a pot, and placing them in fun baskets. Just unleash your creativity.

Because fat plants want minimal attention, some call them "plants of steel". The can live inside as well as outside. Just make sure they are close to a window or have at least little bit of daylight if you place them inside. You will get away with watering every 2 weeks (yay!), and minimum amount of fertilizer.

Snake plants (the first plant in the picture block on the right) is known for its air purifying abilities. According to a study by NASA, Snake Plant is one of the best plants for improving indoor air quality by passively absorbing toxins (nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde). If you need a little greenery in your bathroom where there is a low level of natural light, Snake Plant will be a perfect fit.

"I GROW PLANTS FOR MANY REASONS: TO PLEASE MY EYE OR TO PLEASE MY SOUL, TO CHALLENGE THE ELEMENTS OR TO CHALLENGE MY PATIENCE, FOR NOVELTY OR FOR NOSTALGIA, BUT MOSTLY FOR THE JOY IN SEEING THEM GROW." ~ David Hobson

Thompson & Hanson is a great nursery in Houston. They close at 5pm most of the week, so make sure to get there early if you want to spend some time exploring different plants and ideas.

You will find a lot of inspiration here, and not only for gardening. The nursery has a little store with outdoor furniture, stationery, clothing, ideas for kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc.

The people at T&H are nice and knowledgable. Do not be shy to ask questions about any plants.

LOVE PLANTS & THEY WILL LOVE YOU BACK.
